You may be surprised at how much better you feel by doing just a little mindful yoga.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that affects the joints. The joints are the places where two bones meet. Arthritis can affect any joint in the body, but it is most common in the knees. The symptoms of arthritis vary from person to person, but they usually include pain, swelling, and stiffness. There is no one cure for arthritis, but there are many ways to help manage it and reduce pain.

What are the symptoms and causes of arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that affects the joints. It can be painful and cause difficulty moving around. The symptoms of arthritis can vary from person to person, but they usually include pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. Arthritis can also affect the skin around the joints. What causes arthritis, it is often seen as due to a variety of factors, including age, genetics, lifestyle choices, and the environment. However, if it was true that aging was the only cause of osteoarthritis in knees, we would all age the same way. Everyone over a certain age would be suffering. And this is clearly not the case. By the time we reach 50+ we have not all moved in the same way. We have not eaten the same foods. We do not have the same triggers for inflamation in the body. Only some older folk will be in need help with arthitis in knees

As we see there are different causes, there are also different treatments. Each person's experience with arthritis will be different. Some people find relief from traditional treatments such as medications and surgery. Many find that yoga helps because it becomes a way to support and build up the body for other physical activity.

One thing that health care professionals all do agree on is that regular exercise will help to keep the joints healthy and flexible. And this can be a challenge when many of us have been living sedentary lives.

What kind of yoga helps arthritis in knees

Doing yoga when you have arthritis in your knees is beneficial because it helps to improve flexibility, balance, and strength, can help to reduce inflammation and pain and specifically, through certain postures, it helps the knee joint to open. When done properly, yoga will not overwork the joint and cause more inflamation. It is important to check the type of yoga you will be doing to prevent any agressive overworking from happening.

When you know that arthritis can be aggravated by inactivity and can worsen if you don't move. You can go one of two ways. Either move less and avoid the pain. Or move excessively and push through any pain.

The middle way is to do a mindful yoga practice that does NOT stretch the muscles (for that can create instability in the joints) and respects the pain and stiffness, this is an excellent way to keep your joints lubricated. I teach such a method which is designed for joint renewal.

When taught properly, yoga can be perfect for flushing the knee joint and supports the creation of sinovial fluid* around the joint (rather like adding WD40) keeping the joints moving and lubricated.

*Sinovial fluid is a clear, colorless, and viscous fluid that lubricates and protects the joint surfaces. It is produced by the synovial cells in the joint. Sinovial fluid is produced in response to joint compression, warm temperatures, and muscular activity.

However, not all yoga is created equal. The yoga method I have developed for my Joint Renewal system is based on Kaiut which comes from Brazil. This type of yoga focuses on the joints. People who practice find that it helps to improve their joint flexibility, strength, and increases balance but without having to get into any fancy yoga poses or difficult positions.

Some people think that if they have knee pain, and if they have arthritis in their knees, they need to focus on that area of the body. But actually that is very limited, Kaiut yoga has a much more holistic approach. The principles of Kaiut are to reduce nervous tension in the body. To be very relaxed when practicing. And to approach ALL the joints in the body. Too many yoga classes these days are all about revving up the body or over extending it into positions that are unnatural. This is not optimal for healing or creating healthy joints. This will put wear and tear on the joints.
